Today in Shaker Heights, Ohio, President Obama announced the appointment of Richard Cordray to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

In his address, the President emphasized the importance of protecting American consumers:

"Richard is the right man for this job. If you’re a student, his job will be to protect you from dishonest lending practices and make sure you have all the information you need on student loans. If you’re a veteran, he’ll help make sure you aren’t taken advantage of when you come home from serving our country. And if you’re a senior, he’ll help make sure you don’t lose your home or your retirement because someone saw you as an easy target. …I know you’re hearing a lot of promises from a lot of politicians lately. But today, you’re only going to hear one from me. As long as I have the privilege of serving as your president, I promise to do everything I can, every day, to make this country a place where hard work and responsibility mean something – where everyone can get ahead, not just those at the very top or those who know how to work the system."

Last weekend, Mitt Romney said that as president, he would veto the DREAM Act, a law that would create a path to citizenship for hardworking young people who arrived in this country with undocumented parents through no fault of their own. For these students and military members, this country is home.

One DREAM Act student wanted to speak out against Romney's extremism on the DREAM Act and immigration. Here's what Benita Veliz—Veliz, valedictorian of her San Antonio high school and a St. Mary’s University graduate—had to say. For the full call, listen here.

“My parents brought me to the U.S. when I was eight years old. I wasn't looking for a handout then, and I'm not looking for one now. The DREAM Act isn’t about giving driven young people like me a special opportunity to go to college or serve in the military. It is about equal opportunity to contribute to the well-being of the only country we know—so I was appalled when I heard Mitt Romney said he would veto the DREAM Act.

“President Obama is the only one who will pass comprehensive immigration reform and the DREAM Act, and he has already taken action on immigration. The government’s case for my removal is closed because President Obama refocused the efforts of immigration authorities on deporting criminals instead of young people like me who have so much to contribute. But without the DREAM Act, I’m still undocumented, and our immigration system is still broken."

“Romney’s lackluster percentage underscored the absence of enthusiasm among many Republicans for the candidate long seen as the party’s likeliest nominee.” – Washington Post

“Mitt Romney has a problem—three-quarters of the Republican Party gets a really good look at him and says no.” – Chris Matthews, MSNBC

“After a dramatic, confusing night of suspense in the Republican Party's Iowa caucuses, the big winner may well have been a Democrat: Barack Obama.” – Reuters

"Despite Romney’s heavy spending in Iowa and the five years he’s had to make his case to conservative voters, about 3/4 of caucus-goers last night chose someone other than the man who’s been making the case he’s the most electable for five years. More embarrassing for Romney: President Obama—who faced no competition—actually pulled out a competitive number of votes last night. Democrats say 25,000 Iowans turned out to caucus for the president." – Talking Points Memo

"The questions about whether he can expand his base of support — roughly 75 percent of GOP voters did not vote for him—live on for another day." – Maggie Haberman, Politico

"Democrats in Iowa delivered President Obama a resounding vote of confidence yesterday, gathering for caucuses that provided an opportunity for Democrats to test their ability to mobilize the party faithful." – Boston Globe

With all eyes on Mitt Romney as he limped across the finish line in Iowa, we don't want anyone to forget his statement from this past weekend on the DREAM Act, which he reinforced again today on CNN. And more importantly, with critical votes still coming up in the next few months for the Republican party, we think it's imperative that everyone knows exactly where Romney stands on immigration.

Romney told voters in Iowa this past weekend that he'd veto the DREAM Act if it came across his desk as president. The day after the Iowa caucuses, he said it again, this time adding, “If [Hispanic-American voters] want a president who is going to talk to them about a handout or more benefits for free, they got that guy.”

So if Congress finally passes an earned path to citizenship for undocumented young adults so they can pursue a university education or serve in our military – a noncontroversial policy that was co-written by two Senate Republicans and enthusiastically endorsed by John McCain (who has just today endorsed Romney) – President Romney would strike it down.

We are fighting back, and want you to join us. Say you'll keep fighting for the DREAM Act – and help hold Republicans like Romney accountable for the extreme positions they take.

Mitt Romney’s veto pledge isn't the end of the story. He's also said that he wants to send all 11 million undocumented immigrants “home” -- even if they’ve been in this country for decades, contribute to their communities, fight in our armed services, and pay their taxes. We are committed to fighting for a fair, common-sense reform of our immigration system, and a humane approach to young people who were brought to this country as children and only want the opportunity serve our country, contribute to our economy, and become full participants of our society. We’re not talking about handouts.

The choice could not be clearer. Are we standing with valedictorians, soldiers-to-be, and community leaders who need the DREAM Act, or are we willing to pursue an agenda of scoring political points by demonizing millions of innocent, bright young people?

Raise your voice with us today – and say you’re going to keep fighting alongside President Obama and the Democrats for the DREAM Act.

Last night, Mitt Romney received fewer votes at the Iowa caucus than he did when he came in a distant second to Mike Huckabee in 2008—even after campaigning in the state for five whole years and making a sharp turn to the right to appeal to Tea Party voters. Here are the numbers:

2008: Romney received 30,021 votes in the Iowa caucus. CNN reported with 100 percent of precincts reporting that Romney had received 30,021 votes in the 2008 Iowa Republican caucuses.

2012: Romney received 30,015 votes in the 2012 Iowa caucus.

DNC executive director Patrick Gaspard just sent out this email to Democrats. Read it, pass it along, and sign up to be a part of 2012 organizing efforts for President Obama and Democrats in all 50 states:

Just wanted to make sure you saw this email from Obama campaign manager Jim Messina.

He lays out what last night's outcome in Iowa means for the 10 months to come: No matter who wins the Republican nomination, they're going to be running on a Tea Party platform. And when they do, they'll be backed by a barrage of negative ads funded by outside groups -- like the super PACs who already plunked down nearly $13 million into the Iowa caucus alone.

We're fighting back by out-organizing the GOP on the ground.

If you want to be a part of that, sign up to volunteer for the 2012 campaign here.

 Thanks,

 Patrick

 -------------ORIGINAL MESSAGE-------------
From: Jim Messina, BarackObama.com
Subject: This is not a joke

 Friend --

These Republican candidates spent in some cases more than a year -- in Mitt Romney's case seven years -- campaigning in Iowa to be the next president.

But GOP voters there couldn't decisively get behind anyone.

Who exactly leads the Republican race going forward isn't clear, but we do know two things:

 1) The extremist Tea Party agenda won a clear victory. No matter who the Republicans nominate, we'll be running against someone who has embraced that agenda in order to win -- vowing to let Wall Street write its own rules, end Medicare as we know it, roll back gay rights, leave the troops in Iraq indefinitely, restrict a woman's right to choose, and gut Social Security to pay for more tax cuts for millionaires and corporations.

 2) We'll be facing an onslaught of unprecedented spending from outside groups funded by corporations and anonymous donors. In Iowa alone, so-called "super PACs" spent $12.9 million on almost exclusively negative ads. These groups will turn their fire even more directly on us in the weeks ahead to prove that their candidate is the most anti-Obama.

This race is officially on -- and if we want to win, the only way is to out-organize them on the ground.

Many observers still think Mitt Romney will be the Republican nominee. If he is, we will be prepared. But it's curious that no one can really explain how, when or why the 70-plus percent of Republicans saying in polls and in Iowa that Mitt Romney's not their candidate will suddenly come around.

So the path ahead for Romney -- or whichever of the Republican candidates is going to emerge from this process -- is sadly and starkly very clear: to run even further to the extreme right, and make even more dangerous promises that threaten not only the progress we've made but the fundamental fabric of American society.

We also know that candidates who take these extreme positions can, in the right circumstances, win not only a primary but also a general election in just about any state.

Just ask the Tea Party senators from Pennsylvania and Kentucky, and the Tea Party governors in Florida and Wisconsin.

Watching the circus on TV, it's tempting to think it's almost funny -- but this is not a joke.

 We've got to be ready.

What you decide to do next will determine which kind of politics wins this election.

 More soon.

While Republicans have focused on building their campaigns in Iowa, the New York Times noted that "In spite of all the attention on the Republicans, Mr. Obama is the most organized candidate in the state." Now that the caucus is over, and the Republican candidates have moved on to New Hampshire, the Obama campaign efforts in Iowa continue. Watch the NY Times video here, and learn about why our ground game in Iowa is so robust.

As DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz said just last night:

"Since April, Democrats have opened eight campaign offices in Iowa to get Barack Obama re-elected, she said. The offices are in Cedar Rapids, Sioux City, Des Moines, Waterloo, Davenport, Iowa City, Dubuque, and Council Bluffs."

"Democrats have held more than 1,200 training and planning sessions in the state, made more than 350,000 phone calls to supporters, and held more than 4,000 “personal sitdowns with voters about what really matters to them,” Schultz said.

The strength of our efforts in Iowa are indisputable, as last night the OFA team recruited over 7,500 volunteers and over 25,000 Iowans caucused in support of Barack Obama.
